Kenwood FleetSync/NEXEDGE Programming
including NX-5XXXX Bluetooth data


 

Datalink's software is compatible with Kenwood NEXEDGE and analog Fleetsync radios running over trunked or conventional channels. The radios can be used in basic stand-alone mode, or enhanced with external data devices.

The DataGate Software routing hub can be installed in any Windows computer located locally or remote, including Cloud Servers and connects into the radio network via one or more of the following options;

  • Direct IP where the DataGate IP routing Hub acts a Console in the network. http://www.datalinksystemsinc.com/support/datagate.pdf      Section 12.1.3
  • Serial to Ethernet adaptor connected to one or more Base Radios. Multiple Base Radios in any location can be connected providing there is  backhaul link to the DataGate Hub.
  • Direct serial cable between Base Radio and computer hosting DataGate.

Radio Configuration NEXEDGE Gen 2 GID and UID Data Routing

A DataGate will only see voice calls that are directed to its console ID, or on a group that it is monitoring. So if you have customers talking on GID 1234, you need to add this into DataGate, which will then register to monitor this group. This can include PTT GPS Tracking.

Adding a GID is straightforward. Just create a new asset in DataGate as type "Kenwood Radio", and assign it the GID you want to monitor. Do this for each group you want to monitor.

On a technical note, you can use the "Single TX Source" /View/Data Sources option to select a dedicated Kenwood TX Source to use for this group. DataGate will then register on that source only. You could then set up multiple console connections, each monitoring separate groups, allowing simultaneous voice calls.

If using a single console connection, DataGate will only be able to handle one call at a time

Radio Configuration NX 200/300 700/800

Datalink supports running the radios in standard or transparent modes. In standard mode, the system uses Kenwood protocols to route data through the network. Transparent mode causes the radios to broadcast data over the entire network, which is less efficient. This is only required when using devices that do not use the Kenwood protocols, such as Mobius.

The radios need to be configured so that data is sent in the correct format. The required KPG-111d configuration settings for each radio can be found here. It is very important to set the radio IDs correctly, allowing the network to route data to the appropriate destination.

If you will be sending status messages from mobile or portable radios, program the Status Message list so that status codes can be used to send canned messages. For example, Status 1 = 'Job Complete'.

Mobile Radio Set-Up  NX 700/800 (no external i50 or MDT connected)

  • Go to Edit/Optional Features/Optional Features 1/Common Page 3 menu.
    • COM port 1  = GPS, 1 Stop Bit, 4800 baud. Use COM port 1 if connecting an external GPS receiver to the radio's rear DB-25 port. Use COM port 2 if using a GPS receiver installed inside the radio. Adjust the baud rate to match the GPS output.
  • Go to Edit/Optional Features/Optional Features 2/GPS menu.
    • GPS Report Mode = Auto or Poll. Auto will send GPS reports based on the GPS interval settings. Poll will not send GPS reports unless requested by the server.
    • GPS Message Type = Full
    • GPS Report Intervals set to desired GPS update rates.
  • Go to Edit/NXDN/General 1 menu.
    • Enter a Unit ID (Own) for this unit. This ID must also be set in the DataGate server to identify transmissions from this radio.
    • Base ID Type = Unit ID
    • Set the Base ID to the ID programmed into the base unit.
  • Go to Edit/NXDN/Status List menu.
    • Enter a list of status messages which can be sent from the mobile unit to the base. Only the status ID is transmitted over the air, so the status text must also be programmed into the Kenwood Source program.
  • Go to Edit/NXDN/GPS menu.
    • Check which events should trigger a GPS report (in addition to the GPS interval reports). For example, selecting "Voice Call" will cause the radio to transmit a GPS position whenever a voice call is made.
  • Go to Edit/Key Assignment/Panel menu.
    • Optionally, assign keys for "GPS Position Display" and "SDM". GPS Position Display causes the current GPS position to show on the radio's LCD screen. SDM provides a shortcut to sending a status message from the radio.

  • Go to Edit/Optional Features/Optional Features 1/Common Page 3 menu.
    • COM port 1  = Data, 2 Stop Bit, 9600 baud.
  • Go to Edit/NXDN/General 1 menu.
    • Enter a Unit ID (Own) for this unit. This ID must also be set in the DataGate server to identify transmissions from this radio.
    • Base ID Type = Unit ID
    • Set the Base ID to the ID programmed into the base unit.

Base Radio Set-Up

    • COM port 1  = Data + GPS Data Output, 2 Stop Bit, 9600 baud.
  • Go to Edit/NXDN/General 1 menu.
    • Enter a Unit ID (Own) for this unit. This ID must also be set in the DataGate server to identify transmissions from this radio.
    • Base ID Type = Unit ID
    • Set the Base ID to the ID programmed into the base unit.

DataGate to Network Connections

There are a number of ways to connect the NEXEDGE Network to the computer running DataGate.

  1. Direct serial cable connection. (a serial cable from a Base Radio to a computer running DataGate or Datalink's Kenwood Remote Source Software)
  2. Serial to Ethernet adaptor. This permits remote connections over IP networks. We recommend  the NETEON GW212 www.neteon.net

Software Set-Up

  • DataGate is the central server, and must be installed in a local or remote Windows Server or PC in order to process network data. It should have an Internet connection if it will be processing data from remote base radios or repeaters.
  • If connecting base radios directly to PCs, install Kenwood Source (for standard mode) or Radio Source (for transparent) on the PC attached to the radio. The source should be programmed to connect to the DataGate IP address, and the COM port settings must match those programmed into the base radio.
  • In DataGate, add a Data Source for each base station. Each base uses a password or IP address for security and identification.
  • In DataGate, add a new asset ID XXX.XXX.XXX for each mobile/handheld radio. Set the asset type to match the type of device (Kenwood radio, Sprite, i50, Mobius, MDT, etc). If using standard mode, each asset can be programmed for FleetSync or NexEdge modes, and given a radio ID.
  • If you will be sending status messages from the radios, program the Status Message lookup list to match that programmed into the radios. This list is located under the Kenwood Source settings (if used), or Data Source settings (if using serial-to-Ethernet adapters).

External Devices

For advanced messaging and reporting options, consider attaching an external device to the mobile radios.
